| The End of Snow |
I really have a ton of other things to address on this blog, but the progressives just keep throwing this climate nonsense at me, so I just can't resist. Could this be a plot to silence me on real issues (I wish this blog was that popular)? Today, let's disrupt the socialist party line by confusing obvious BS with facts. Case in point: Sochi.
Here is an article published by that beacon of journalistic integrity (just ask them, they'll tell you), the New York Times ... the breathless headline - The End of Snow:
http://www.nytimes.com/2014/02/08/opinion/sunday/the-end-of-snow.html?emc=edit_tnt_20140207&tntemail0=y&_r=3
The writer cites all kinds of studies and statements from .... organizations who have a vested interest in grabbing cash from the "climate change" panic. He also cites the dire statistic that global temperatures have risen 1.4 degrees F since "the 1800's". Probably true, but rough math indictes that a century is 100 years long ... a pretty wide window, meaning his spread could be from 114 to 214 years long. He also ignores the fact that global temps have DROPPED .36 degrees F since 2001 - just 13 short years. See, here's the deal ... climate, just like weather, does change. We don't really understand why (despite the claims of puffed up academics), but since temperature is dropping while CO2 is supposedly increasing might be a pretty good indicator that this innocuous gas really doesn't do anything but feed plants. I figured that out, and I didn't even graduate from Harvard!
The author also cites his horrible experiences skiing on manmade snow. Oh, the horror! How does one want to continue living under these conditions? By the way dummy, have you hit the slopes this year? Those snow guns must be running 24 x 7 to pump out this much white stuff! And, if you are an avid cross country skier, I hear Boston is THE destination for that sport!
Now lets visit Sochi, where the author of the above article bemoans the horrible conditions ... no snow, man made snow and snow saved from last year. OK ... let's look at the facts. First, Sochi is a Black Sea resort town, right next to Chechnya. Our good pal Vlad selected this for one reason only ... politics. Those rebels won't scare him! I mean really, why else would you select a resort town in a mild climate to conduct the Winter Olympics?
Did I say mild climate? Obviously, I'm nuts ... it's really a ski resort right? Wrong. Have a look:

Here's a few fun facts about Sochi during the month of February:
Average Temperature - 42.8 F (140 years of data)
Average High - 49 F (19 years of data)
Average Low - 37 F (19 years of data)
Average Precipitation - 5" (45 years of data)
Average Number of Days With Snow - 3 (19 years of data)
This sounds more like Charlotte, North Carolina (Average February Temperature - 43.9 F) than a ski resort to me. So this begs the question: how does a lack of snow in Sochi surprise ANYONE? Better question: why would ANYONE select this place for the Winter Olympics? At best, it is a moderate climate area. For answers to these stupid mere mortal questions, you would have to ask those paragons of wisdom, Vlad Putin and the International Olympic Committee. I have a guess, (but I'm just a conspiracy nut) ... it involves money, Russian politics and "climate change" politics.
Feel free to spread this info around. It might actually educate someone.
